All of our cows are born on the farm and raised on our pastures. We have spent years fine tuning the mix of grass species to make a diversity of forage available, irrespective of the weather. From spring through early winter, we move the herd daily to a fresh area. This system, known as intensive rotational grazing, mimics the natural grazing patterns of herd animals in the wild. This allows the grass time to rest and regrow and helps build healthy soil.
It also helps to break insect and parasite cycles. We feed grass hay to our cows in the winter and all year long we offer free access to OMRI-approved sea salt, vitamins, and minerals, which in turn re-mineralize the soil. During periods of inclement weather, we feed our cattle in an open-sided barn. We utilize a bedded manure pack system. This historic method emphasizes animal comfort over production efficiency.
The resulting compost is spread back on the fields after the winter to help grow our vegetables Chickens are raised on pasture in mobile chicken coops. They follow the cows in the pasture rotation and eat the flies that would otherwise bother the cattle. They produce both meat and eggs. Chickens come whole, and eggs by the dozen. We sell beef by the whole, half, and quarter, as well as individual cuts.
Pork is available as a side or a whole, or as individual cuts as well. Both can be custom cut to your specifications and will include a variety of retail-sized cuts. Our pigs are rotationally grazed on pasture and in wooded fencerows from April through December. In the winter we bring the pasture to them, in the form of hay harvested from our fields. We grow kale, pumpkins, oats, and root crops for the pigs, and we continue to play with the mixture to find optimal homegrown feed.
We supplement their forage with organic grain, whey from a nearby cheese shop, and vegetables from regional farmers markets. Pasture raised meat chickens and eggs are also available.
